Cannabis Consumption during COVID

New research by University of Toronto, Unveils Spike in Cannabis Consumption during COVID-19 Pandemic

A study by the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, highlights a spike in medicinal cannabis consumption during the COVID-19 Pandemic, social isolation amongst the leading causes.

COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as a global challenge and hampered millions of lives across the globe. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak shelter-in-place restrictions, and social distancing norms were put into effect to curb the spread, resulting in a change in lifestyle including cannabis consumption. As per recent research conducted by the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada has depicted a steep rise in cannabis consumption for medical and recreational use.

Dr. Zeynep Ilgaz Acar, a researcher at the University of Toronto, stated, “Our findings have highlighted that feeling of boredom, depression, and anxiety during the pandemic have contributed to an increase in the use of cannabis.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, different restrictions were imposed to reduce the influx in SARS-CoV-2 virus transferability which resulted in an increase in social anxiety, boredom, and depression.

To cope up with such boredom many shifted to using psychoactive substances like cannabis to settle their fillings. This research implemented a survey sampling technique on different age demographics in more than 15 countries including the United States, Canada, Spain, Italy, Australia, Malta, Germany, India, Hungary, Nigeria, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, and Norway to undermine how social anxiety and isolation has increased cannabis consumption.

Medical cannabis has shown promising results in various medical conditions and has been legalized in some countries with reasonable restrictions. Another report published by Oregon State University also suggested that specific hemp-based compounds can effectively stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus from entering the human body.

The cannabis plant has been used for ages for medical and recreational purpose, it is by far the most sustainable crop which can be used for various industrial and pharmaceutical products. We can obtain food, paper, building material, and medical products from hemp crops. The recent growth in cannabis consumption needs more in-depth research to highlight its pros and cons on the human body. Hemp is in fact a reasonable solution for many health problems, and soon we will have a better understanding of this sustainable plant.
